NEARBY ATTRACTIONS
The location of this home is close to many nearby area attractions such as Folly Cove, Halibut Point State Park, and the nearby village of Lanesville that includes a small grocery store, a post office, the Cove Café, and other amenities. The Lobster Pool is nearby for a nice sunset dinner of clams, fish, lobster or other seafood options.
The best kept secret would be Plum Cove beach, also located nearby. This is a small beach that hosts one of the only western Sunsets over ocean waters on the Atlantic coast. It’s a perfect setting to enjoy your evening fried clams or scallops while watching the sunset.
Less than five minutes down the road is the world-class attraction of the town of Rockport that features the iconic red fishing shack called “Motif #1” and a beautiful harbor and adjacent shops and beaches. There are several fine dining, and family restaurants, as well as the renowned Shalin Liu concert venue that features music events of all styles including classical and symphonic, jazz, world and contemporary music.
Both Rockport and Gloucester are well known for their Arts. Winslow Homer, Fitz Henry Lane, Edward Hopper and other famous artists used Cape Ann as their subject. One of the best small scale museums is the Cape Ann Historic located in Gloucester center near City Hall. It’s well worth the visit.
ENJOYING THE WATERFRONT
Of course it is necessary to underscore the significance of the City Of Gloucester’s working waterfront, one of the last active day boat fleet waterfronts remaining in the US. Featured in many films, such as “The Perfect Storm,” Gloucester is the oldest active Seaport in the nation and legendary for its cod fishing. You can visit the Gloucester Maritime Museum on the waterfront for a full display of the city’s history as a renowned seaport.
Whale watching and recreational fishing vessels are located near the Gloucester Maritime Center, or take an evening tour of the harbor on an old schooner.
BEACHES
There are several beaches in Gloucester that can be accessed by the city’s online reservation portal. You must reserve your spot on the beach and a space for your car. Good Harbor Beach is an eastern facing beach with impressive waves that often attracts surfing enthusiasts. Wingaersheek beach is a northwestern facing beach and features a gentle sloping sandy beach that oftentimes enjoys more temperate waters for swimmers (The early bird avoids the long line of cars waiting to park).
SHOPPING
The bustling shopping area of Main and Rogers Streets in the city center offers quality dining options and shops that feature local artisans.
ENTERTAINMENT
For live music, the Cut on Main Street and the Rhumbline on Washington Street both feature blues and contemporary acts several nights per week.
On Middle Street are located several religious denomination churches, including UCC, Presbyterian, and Jewish temple. The city hosts two Catholic Churches: St Ann’s and Our Lady of Good Voyage – featured in the movie “The Perfect Storm” (worth a peek inside for anyone who’s interested in seeing the artistic rendering of fishing boat models used as stations of the cross).
For live performance plays and shows, try Windover, the outdoor theater 🎭 in Rockport, or the Gloucester Stage Company on East Main Street.
Don’t forget the famous Italian heritage festival called “St. Peter’s Fiesta” in early July in Gloucester that features a carnival and the popular contest called “the Greasy Pole.”
DINING
A great choice for a romantic evening drink and/or dinner would be:
The Franklin on Main Street or the Patio on Rocky Neck.
The Beauport Hotel on Gloucester’s waterfront or the Emerson Inn in Rockport both have upscale dining and old world charm.
SPORTS ACTIVITIES
Public access golfing is nearby, at the Cape Ann Golf Club on Route 133 in Essex – a picturesque nine hole course featuring vistas of the Great Marsh of Essex.
Public tennis is available at courts on Stacey Boulevard and at the Gloucester High School. Pickleball is available at Sweeney Park in Manchester (but you have to get up early to beat the crowd of players).
There’s a lot to do on Cape Ann or just come and relax and do nothing at all and stick your toes in the sand!
